Mayor's Arts Award

Yesterday I received an award and a small grant from Mayor Bill Finch and the BACC to fund a project I proposed for the city of Bridgeport. The goal of the project is to bring art projects to neighborhoods overlooked by public art commissions and galleries. The artwork will be projected on historical buildings and lots around the city. I'll keep you updated on the progress.

We worked so hard to make this show happen and fought to prove that it was relevant and would be a success and it was. Its actually became its own "thing", and the influence of the show has spread out to the artists, schools, and local galleries. We've sold artwork every week in a down market, influenced children to pick up a paintbrush, and changed the minds of the nay sayers.

American spray paint makes a comeback?

The team ordered a palette of this new Evolve paint last week. We've been taking it out for some tests and its pretty fresh, the colors are pure and the coverage is excellent. Not to mention the price point. Its funny to me how writers who were purely rusto and american accents heads used to diss these exotic paints but now they're the standard. Now we've gone full circle and it looks like the states have a competing brand. Let's see how it plays out.

Recently had the privilege of sitting for the printmaker and painter Syahrizal Pahlevi (Levi for short) of Indonesia during my residency at the Vermont Studio Center. I'm learning more than I can keep up with mainly from the international and veteran artists here. I haven't been creating as much of my own work as I have been sitting and listening to how professionals work and taking notes. All that and enjoying the local brews!

There's been three snowstorms since I've been here so there's not much to do besides get into the studio and get to work. There's about forty artists and writers in residence here. We woke up for the 7:30am breakfast to about two feet of snow and afterwards made the trek to our respective studios. I couldn't have asked for a better group of artists to live with out here. Going into the residency I had a lot of inner pressure to create a substantial body of work while I'm here. As I slowed down and began to speak with my fellow residents though I'm beginning to realize this is about creating, but also taking advantage of the resource in my fellow artists. Having the time to organize myself and really look at and analyze my past work has been great, not to mention the food is bangin!

Lee Steele, a Connecticut based art director and writer showed me a little love on his website, highlighting my upcoming residency at the Vermont Studio Center. Its definitely a privilege to be able to step out of the daily grind and be able to have the time to think about my work and where I plan to go with it. Hopefully I will meet like minded artists who can give me a little insight into their process. The past year has been one of steady progression, loss, and self discovery. The goal is to grow. This weekend I photographed the founder of Kultjah Dezigns for a large format portrait series I'm working on. He's now the creative head for an international fashion label while simultaneously starting an interior design firm with painter and art director Will Corprew.

The first time I saw work by Jahmane and his team was while they were painting a mural on the artspace building I'm currently living in. This was in 2003 before the building wasn't even being considered for the artist apartments. The symbolism, biblical allusions, and graffiti inspired designs made me an instant fan. Glad to still see him and the team still at it.

Jahmane and a handful of other artists from NYC and Connecticut will be participating in a group show on graffiti and graffiti inspired works on March 11 at Artspace Bridgeport. Details coming soon.

All of us are storytellers. My family especially from the youngest to the eldest tell the most interesting stories. They may not be all the way true but if its a good enough story who minds really.

Recently I've been interested in telling my story through other people searching for the universal chord.
One story that has been very important to me is my grandfather's recent struggling health. As his health is declining I've been simultaneously working on a documentary about a local woman battling Alzheimer's. My real life experience whether I try to or not has definitely seeped into this project.

We were able to shoot the trailer below and have put the project on a brief hiatus as we seek fundraisers to complete the story. What you see below is from the combined efforts of many and a great team that believed in a vision and the worth of a story I feel more than a few will be able to connect with.

After purchasing my first digital camera a few weeks ago I still feel like a kid with a brand new toy. Shooting non stop pretty much everyday quickly building up a new body of work for my website. I'm keeping it very loose and not really shooting with a purpose for the time being as I get to know the camera.

My first camera test was during the blizzard here in the tri state area a week ago. What better time to shoot portraits than when you have a building full of artists trapped inside trying to wait out the storm. Here's a few selects from those two days:

Art & Alzheimer's documentary

For the past two months I've been working nonstop on researching and developing a documentary about an amazing local artist and her daughter. Charla Boteler is a wonderful woman living in Black Rock, Connecticut who used to be a painter and fashion illustrator, she now has Alzheimer's disease. With the help of her daughter Alison and her boyfriend Jim she lives a happy home life while maintaining her creative passion from years past.

I've had the privilege of getting to know this family and develop the story I'd like to tell about them. This weekend along with the amazing team at Cinescape Productions I was able to fund and shoot the first portion of this documentary.

In the above photo I am preparing to interview Helen Klisser During at the Westport Arts Center. Helen is an art dealer, private buyer, and curator of numerous public art installations from the US to New Zealand. She along with several other gallery owners who have shown Charla's work gave us their time and heartfelt answers to this project.

We are taking a break from shooting to work on fundraising and story development. I'll keep you posted.

So I guess Utah is going to be my second home again in the next year as I just learned TWO that's right folks twooo films I worked on this year were accepted into dramatic competition for Sundance 2011.

Congratulations to Director and Sundance Director's Lab fellow Dee Rees and producer Nekisa Cooper. Thier film Pariah will make its world premier at the festival! This was one of the first films I was really able to flex my camera skills and really learn the ins and outs of my department. The film was shot by DP Bradford Young and his first assistant Hans Charles who both continue to guide me to this day. Congrats guys!

The second film I jumped on towards the end of shooting is titled Gun Hill Road directed by Rashaad Ernesto Green. The DP was Daniel Patterson who I have been able to join on several other projects throughout the year. I can't wait to see both of these projects and hope they do well and get to as wide an audience as possible.

Arts Walk Bridgeport!

The arts events in Bridgeport this weekend past could not have been better. I met numerous artists from the tristate area, went to five different openings, two of which were at brand new galleries! Not to mention the open studios at the various factories in the city including my own open studio at the Nest Lofts. I was also able to show new photographs from my recent trip to West Africa at the Read's Artspace Gallery to a pretty good response.

There are quite a few people doing new and exciting things in this city and I'm glad to be a small part of it. Looking forward to collaboration and sales, (hey let's be honest) in the near future. We're entering the new year with a rolling start!

In The Company of Warhol

The above is an image of Fab Five Freddy @ the premier episode of Glenn O'Brien's TV Party a cable access television show that ran from the late 70s to the early 80s. It featured some of the most prominent names in the American pop art and literary scenes from that time.

This and much more can be viewed at the Housatonic Museum of Art in downtown Bridgeport, CT. The show is a refreshing take on Warhol's associates on those from later generations who were directly and indirectly influenced by his work. Even though that could be taken as a pretty broad stroke for a show since Warhol seems to be the most imitated artist since DeKooning but the curator did a great job in choosing artists that complemented each other to make it a satisfying experience. Going back to my roots. Sometimes when you get stuck it helps to go back and review the basics in your field. Having a deep and solid foundation allows you to build taller and more complex structures. Recently I've been battling a bad case of writers/creative block or just getting bored with creating images the way I have in the past. The problem isn't how the images look but more so my approach, process and why I'm creating these images.

The above are just two titles that I've been going over for the past month or so that have shaken things up a bit. The first is the classic "Ways of Seeing" by art critic John Berger. Either you love this title or you completely disagree with everything it says. Personally I think its great for brushing up on your visual literacy in this age of instant image reproduction and dissemination. The second title is "In the Making" by Linda Weintraub exploring various artist's processes.

I go back to this quote often made by my old art history professor. I look down at wear on my literal shoes, and inward towards my penchant for traveling and discovering new and hidden places. If the shoe fits right?

There's tons of these places in every city and suburb in America. Abandoned warehouses, factories, and storage facilities with code names given by their current tenants. This one in particular, "London" has been repurposed by artists and underground paintball tournament organizers.

There's a code of ethics for those who are in the know that are to be followed in order to not "blow up the spot" so it can be maintained as a safe and more importantly free multi-use space. I've visited these places since I was a kid and look for them to this day. Discovery, preservation, and exclusivity.

Self portraits are weird.

I still view them like i do photographs in that they're just capturing the mood of a particular moment in time. Looking at this image today I feel I've moved past what this portrait meant to me when I created it earlier this year. Six self portraits chopped and layered with scanned watercolor swatches and segments from my morning pages.

Mountain Time pt. 2

Three weeks in the mountains of Utah finally came to a wrap this Sunday past. The experience was humbling and I'm thankful to have even been a part of it. The more experienced crew members from LA definitely made me step up my camera assistant game and I'm hype to get back to work on some big features. There's too many stories to share but it still amazes me how just two years ago I was literally dreaming about coming out here in any capacity and I just finished working on two great projects with a highly skilled crew of people who love what they do.

The Miami based self taught artist Purvis Young passed away this past Tuesday and I thought I'd highlight him and his work. I rarely use my blog to commemorate people who pass away but he was a man who I definitely related to in life experience and the way he approached his work and community.

I was introduced to his work through the Folk Art Museum based in NYC during my years at Parsons. After reading candid interviews about his process and general thoughts about his audience I related to his work more than any other working artist black or white in America at the time. Even though he was taken advantage of by bad managers who stripped him of his earnings multiple times his work is held by notable institutions such as the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and The Smithsonian.

Bravo rolls out their newest "reality" competition show Work of Art.

Hopefully this won't be a complete mockery of the art world as if working artists haven't had enough to battle with in these times. People have been calling bull on the art world and its structure more frequently lately and I'm sure this show will give critics and your average joe more than enough ammunition to keep the attacks coming.

Where artwork that matters will stand after this assault is yet to be determined. More motivation to be an art history teacher for me though. Keep watching folks.

Trailers Up!

Its something else going from being right next to the camera on every shot, to seeing it on the big screen. Even though the gig was tough I still feel like a kid when I see trailers for the films I've worked on. I know a good portion of the people I work alongside are jaded from decades of being behind the scenes but for all the blood, sweat, and tears it takes to produce, seeing the end product reminds me of why I love this business so much.

I had the pleasure of working for renowned Director of Photography Rodrigo Prieto and his camera team of highly skilled professionals. I wouldn't trade the lessons I learned working on this feature for anything.

But there's no looking back so it's on to the next one. I'm gearing up for my next project.. Rock wit me.

Ryan McGinley is back? Well I guess he never left but it seems like he took a bit of a hiatus to take his work in new directions. Team in NYC is playing host to his new show "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere" where he debuts these new pieces on March 18. In recent interviews he's stated that he'd like to make his work more filmic and is heading in the direction of the moving image.

I had the privilege of meeting him briefly before he left Parsons while I was printing in the color darkroom. He was printing an image of a tall young man in an elevator staring dead at the viewer. I remember thinking about how simple the image was. A few months later I was going to his show at the Whitney.

I look forward to seeing what he has in store for us in the future.

Sen2 is working in pushing the future of graff and art in general, putting out a clothing line, and teaching classes in Spain and across the US including the BX. I look forward to building with him and his crew in the near future.

I've always been interested in the rift between older and younger generation of black Americans and the suspicion and tension between the two parties. One thing that I have to admit though is most "progressive" or academic black youth don't buy into the concept of black history month. This is not meant to disprespect what social, religious, and political leaders of the past have done but more so to acknowledge they've done so well that we look up to and for them as we carve out the path in a new age everyday.

Our faces stretch across all stratum of the American fabric and we've come to recognize that one month of Dr. King quotes pales in comparison to the affect of recognizing our past and keeping it alive with our actions every day.

Then again my neighbors have always had a band. Its a good thing I love em. The thing I love about Artspace is being so close to creative folks on a daily basis. If you need inspiration just knock on a door!

The Stepkids are the funkiest group this side of long island sound and have a sincere love for the music. I love swinging by to get some footage of them when I can. Here's a little video of a practice session I shot and then a music video they produced and shot on their own for their first single Brain Ninja.

I'm going to do the same thing I did last year! Ha, how's that for a change???

Seriously though I wish I had more time to update but the second half of 2009 was a whirlwind of activity. I do miss blogging about current events and the goals and accomplishments of my own and my associates. Just know that if I'm absent its a sign that I'm trying to knock out one of the projects I have on deck. And I'll keep you guys posted as progress is made.

The earlier part of the year until late summer was rough for everyone I think as the recession effected all industries but I held on and made it my goal to dig into a camera position on a major studio picture by years end. I bounced around on Ugly Betty for a few weeks and finally landed a gig as the personal assistant to Rodrigo Prieto for Wall Street 2. This was pretty amazing as it was totally out of the blue and he's directed some of my favorite films. (see Frida & 25th hour)

That was one of the toughest gigs I've worked and honestly showed me how little effort I had been putting in to creating my own work. Three days after we wrapped on Wall Street I started as the loader for the feature Pariah which I had seen almost 2 years ago at Sundance as a short! Crazy coincidence, and a great project that gave me a lot of encouragement. I never worked on project being helmed by a black female director and producer AND DP! Pretty amazing! There's a ton of stories to share with you but I think I'll spread them out over the days. Thanks for stickin around and best to you and your dreams in the new decade.

I was REALLY looking forward to this. Actually had an excuse to go back to Australia but unfortunately its been "postponed" for the time being. From the sound of things they're trying to bring it stateside so we'll have to wait with baited breath until then.

I'm trying to head out to LA after this feature I'm working on in NYC wraps up to paint and chill for a few weeks. A whole heap of things a gwan so when I get a moment to breath I'll update you.

In the meantime keep painting, writing, shooting, and staying inspired.

He hails from Bridgeport by way of Maine and London somehow, and he definitely left a couple of listeners permanently scarred.

My neighbor gave me her bmx before she moved out of my building. This is probably the best gift I've received all year. My car is getting rusty as we speak because me and this here bike have a special connection.

Hello my name is Yves and I am addicted to TWITTER.

Seriously, if you're looking at my lack of posts between now and early May and wondering what the heck happened... blame it on the tweetdeck. I know in my heart this is leading to something constructive but I can't figure out what it is yet because I never get to really finish a thought since I'm forced to keep them all under 160 characters.

With that being said FOLLOW ME! And if you're not on twitter bless your heart. Try and keep it that way for as long as possible. I would go into detail about how I feel social networking is actually creating psychological barriers during "real life" interaction but you can probably find hundreds of articles about that on your own.

So hey I'm going to try and get back in the swing of things and take you along for the ride. I'm dj'ing tonight at Karma Lounge in NYC.

I'll hopefully be spinning some dubstep and wonky if the crowd is right. The place is a hookah lounge from what I understand so they should be digging the vibes. I'm trying to take this act on the road people.

Even for a genre dominated by dubplates, 12"s and podcasts, my gut reaction tells me it will be a good year for dubstep or dubstep-affilated albums. With the Hyperdub album race underway (current front runner: Darkstar's, which I'm exceptionally excited about...) and Kryptic Minds' dark opus - not to mention a little something up my sleeve on Keysound, the album format may be about to hold its own this year.

In this company comes a very strong contender for album of the year, "City Limits Volume 1" by Silkie. Released on Mala's Deep Medi label, I've written about it in depth in my Pitchfork column this month, due live next week. But ahead of that, here's an interview with Silkie...

This past show was a trip, we had the studio shaking as usual. Right now we're in the planning stages for a late summer tour from San Fran to DC. Its like woe!

I don't think we played one old track for the duration of the set. We tried to put a major emphasis on artists from the US as well as playing a few tunes that, weren't necessarily dubstep, from local artists in CT, Mass, and New York. So enjoy the tunes and get your bass face ready.

During the G20 conference there was literally blood on the streets of London from protests against the banks. Here in the US though we've had a higher unemployment rate and greater loss of wealth here in the US due to bank failures. Fortune's Andy Serwer tries to briefly explain why he thinks we haven't seen the violent outbursts Europe has.

I have no idea why I put the post title in all caps, its not like they pay me for subliminal advertising to try and convince you guys to go and check out their incredible selection which is like H&M's hotter older sister that makes you wish you had a reading list just so you can have "study group" with her, but yeah...

TOPSHOP just launched an NYC right down the street from the myriad of H&M's so expect the droves to move south because they have style for days. My girl went to the opening of this and said it looked like a Michael Jackson ticket line or something. Check em out and tell me if you see anything in a 32 waist 40 regular.

Oh yeah and they're hosting a contest to ship one of their lucky customers across the pond to London Fashion Week SS10. Check it out on their bloggy blog.
